Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is acclaimed as one of the greatest botanical gardens in the world. There are not a lot of natural areas that can match the amazing location of Kirstenbosch, set against the eastern slope of Table Mountain, with views over Cape Town and beyond.
While at Kirstenbosch, you can explore the many beautiful indigenous and endangered plants of the fynbos ("fine bush") biome. You can bring your own picnic, or enjoy the food at Moyo Restaurant or the Kirstenbosch Tea Room. A new addition to the gardens is the Boomslang ("tree snake") - an elevated wooden walkway with amazing views over Cape Town.
From Kirstenbosch you can also access several hikes to the top of Table Mountain, the most popular being an ascent via Skeleton Gorge and descent via Nursery Ravine, which gives you access to one of the three dams on top of Table Mountain.
If you visit Kirstenbosch in summer, you may be lucky to attend one of the live music events that forms part of the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts. There is also a pet-friendly loop in the gardens for the dog-lovers.
