The African Penguin colony at Boulders Beach in Simons Town is one of the few land-based African Penguin colonies. Most breeding colonies are located on islands around the southern coast of Africa. The site has become a popular international tourist destination due to the presence of the endangered African Penguins, as well as the crystal clear waters and sparkling white sandy beach.
Boulders Beach is part of Table Mountain National Park, and consists of three sandy beaches, a penguin viewing platform, three boardwalks and of course many boulders! The beach is safe for families, as large boulders prevent strong ocean currents. They also block the infamous Cape Town south-easter wind.
Although the penguins look sweet and cuddly, they are wild animals with sharp beaks, and they would happily nip an enquiring finger from a curious visitor, therefore visitors are required to respect the penguins and not interact with them.
