This is the largest castle that's built into a cave in the world. At one point, in the 14th century, the castle was besieged for a year and a day. It exhibits Renaissance architecture, and has been home to many interesting characters including Erazem Lueger – a famous knight and nobleman.
The entrance to the castle is 120 metres from the valley floor and set deep into the rock. The romantic exterior is complemented by the idyllic river Lokva, which cuts underground beneath the castle. It is a magnificent piece of architecture and somewhere that should not be missed.
Tours take about 1 hour and packages can be bought to include the Postojna Caves too.
