To the south of Prague is a castle which is famous for literally holding a treasure chest! This Gothic-style castle was founded in 1348 by Charles IV and marked the location for keeping the Imperial Regalia (royal treasure). The castle also held a wealth of Bohemian crown jewels and other holy relics. Even if you don’t wish to go inside the castle, admiring its crenellations and battlements from the exterior, set against forested hills, is well worth the trip. There is a train from Prague Central Station to Karlstejn that takes 40 minutes. From here, there is a 20 minute walk over the Berounka river and up the hill to the castle.
